يُعْتَبَرُ الْخَطُّ الْعَرَبِيُّ مِنْ أَرْقَى الْفُنُونِ الْبَصَرِيَّةِ الَّتِي أَنْتَجَتْهَا الْحَضَارَةُ الْإِسْلَامِيَّةُ عَلَى مَرِّ الْعُصُورِ. نَشَأَ هَذَا الْفَنُّ فِي الْجَزِيرَةِ الْعَرَبِيَّةِ وَتَطَوَّرَ تَدْرِيجِيًّا حَتَّى أَصْبَحَ أَدَاةً فَنِّيَّةً وَجَمَالِيَّةً بَالِغَةَ التَّعْقِيدِ وَالْإِبْدَاعِ. تَتَمَيَّزُ أَنْوَاعُ الْخَطِّ الْعَرَبِيِّ بِتَنَوُّعِهَا الْكَبِيرِ، مِنْ خَطِّ النَّسْخِ الْوَاضِحِ الْمُسْتَخْدَمِ فِي الْكُتُبِ وَالصُّحُفِ إِلَى خَطِّ الثُّلُثِ الْمُزَخْرَفِ الَّذِي يُزَيِّنُ الْمَسَاجِدَ وَالْقُصُورَ. كَانَ الْخَطَّاطُونَ يَقْضُونَ سَنَوَاتٍ طَوِيلَةً فِي التَّدْرِيبِ قَبْلَ أَنْ يُتْقِنُوا فَنَّهُمْ. يَسْتَخْدِمُ الْخَطَّاطُ أَدَوَاتٍ خَاصَّةً مِثْلَ الْقَلَمِ الْمَصْنُوعِ مِنَ الْقَصَبِ وَالْحِبْرِ الْأَسْوَدِ الْمُحَضَّرِ يَدَوِيًّا. فِي الْعَصْرِ الْحَدِيثِ، دَخَلَ الْخَطُّ الْعَرَبِيُّ مَجَالَ التَّصْمِيمِ الرَّقَمِيِّ وَالْفَنِّ الْمُعَاصِرِ. يَمْزِجُ فَنَّانُونَ شَبَابٌ بَيْنَ التَّقْنِيَّاتِ التَّقْلِيدِيَّةِ وَالْأَدَوَاتِ الرَّقَمِيَّةِ لِإِنْتَاجِ أَعْمَالٍ تَجْمَعُ بَيْنَ الْأَصَالَةِ وَالْحَدَاثَةِ. انْتَشَرَتْ مَعَارِضُ الْخَطِّ الْعَرَبِيِّ فِي عَوَاصِمَ عَالَمِيَّةٍ مِثْلَ لَنْدَنَ وَبَارِيسَ وَنِيُويُورْكَ. كَمَا أَصْبَحَ الْخَطُّ الْعَرَبِيُّ عُنْصُرًا أَسَاسِيًّا فِي تَصْمِيمِ الشِّعَارَاتِ وَالْعَلَامَاتِ التِّجَارِيَّةِ فِي الْمِنْطَقَةِ. يَظَلُّ هَذَا الْفَنُّ شَاهِدًا حَيًّا عَلَى قُدْرَةِ اللُّغَةِ الْعَرَبِيَّةِ عَلَى التَّحَوُّلِ مِنْ وَسِيلَةِ تَوَاصُلٍ إِلَى تَجْرِبَةٍ جَمَالِيَّةٍ فَرِيدَةٍ.
