Educational approach
Curriculum roadmap
What Nusoos grades against today, what it is researching, and what it may accompany later. Each entry says what exists now and what is still missing.
Statuses describe Nusoos’s own editorial mapping. They are not endorsements by the organisations named, and the levels of different frameworks are not treated as equivalent to one another.
Frameworks used to grade and design content
Every packaged lesson names the CEFR reading target it works towards (overall reading comprehension, p. 54) and the listening target of its recording (p. 52). The library can be browsed by CEFR band.
- Mapped skills
- Reading · Listening
- What exists today
- Lessons from A1 to C1 carry a reviewed mapping on their Learning goals panel. Reviewed A0 lessons name a selected A1 target they work towards.
- Remaining gaps
- A0 is Nusoos’s own starter stage, not a CEFR level. Speaking and writing descriptors are not mapped. The mapping is editorial; it is not a certification of a learner’s level.
Lessons name the Communication: Interpretive standard. The library can show approximate ACTFL reading sublevels, from Novice Mid to Superior.
- Mapped skills
- Reading · Listening
- What exists today
- The Interpretive standard appears on every lesson’s Learning goals panel; the library’s ACTFL view places each text on a reading band.
- Remaining gaps
- Only the Interpretive mode is referenced. Cultures, Connections, Comparisons and Communities are not mapped, and no ACTFL proficiency rating is implied.
Nusoos Arabic syllabus (A0–C1)
Nusoos
Partial coverageThe course stages the library is organised by: A0 for letters and first texts, then A1 to C1. Each lesson’s grammar notes and vocabulary are Nusoos teaching choices; CEFR does not prescribe an Arabic grammar list.
- Mapped skills
- Reading · Listening · Vocabulary · Grammar
- What exists today
- Every lesson has a level, grammar notes and a vocabulary list; the Learn path covers letters, sounds and first words.
- Remaining gaps
- No published vocabulary or grammar inventory per level yet. Speaking and writing are outside the syllabus.
ALECSO and Arabi21 descriptors; BAREC readability
ALECSO · Arabi21 · BAREC
Legacy referenceThe database keeps a schema for these Arabic-specific level descriptors and readability benchmarks. No published text is currently placed on them.
- Mapped skills
- No skills mapped yet
- Remaining gaps
- Content mapping has not started. Until it does, they describe intended design rather than current grading.
An earlier automatic ACTFL/ILR crosswalk was removed in September 2026 because the equivalences were not supported. ILR is kept only as a reference.
- Mapped skills
- No skills mapped yet
- Remaining gaps
- No ILR mapping is planned.
School and examination pathways
A beginner course with five prescribed themes. Nusoos A0–A1 texts about daily life, food, travel and places cover similar ground, but no text has been mapped to the themes or the assessment tasks yet.
- Mapped skills
- No skills mapped yet
- Remaining gaps
- Theme mapping, the text types of the writing paper and the listening and reading formats of the comprehension paper are still to be researched against the current guide.
An intermediate to advanced course organised by the same five themes. Nusoos A2–C1 texts on science, heritage and daily life are candidate reading and listening material, pending a mapping.
- Mapped skills
- No skills mapped yet
- Remaining gaps
- No theme or text-type mapping yet; the required literary works at HL are outside Nusoos’s scope.
Six phases of language acquisition for ages 11 to 16. Nusoos’s short graded texts suit the reading and listening criteria in principle; nothing is mapped yet.
- Mapped skills
- No skills mapped yet
- Remaining gaps
- Phase placement for each text and the age-appropriateness review remain to be done.
A foreign-language qualification with reading, listening, speaking and writing papers on everyday topics. Nusoos A1–B1 texts are candidate practice material.
- Mapped skills
- No skills mapped yet
- Remaining gaps
- Topic-list mapping and the exam’s task formats have not been researched against the live syllabus.
For learners who already speak Arabic. Its reading passages sit above most of the library; only the B2–C1 texts are relevant.
- Mapped skills
- No skills mapped yet
- Remaining gaps
- Low priority until the C1 library grows.
A GCSE with listening, speaking, reading and writing papers across identity, local area, school, future plans and global themes. Nusoos A1–A2 texts are candidate reading and listening practice.
- Mapped skills
- No skills mapped yet
- Remaining gaps
- Theme mapping and vocabulary-list comparison not started.
The international variant, taken largely by first-language speakers. Relevance to Nusoos is limited to the upper levels.
- Mapped skills
- No skills mapped yet
- Remaining gaps
- Not yet researched.
Proficiency assessments
Nusoos texts could serve as reading and listening practice towards these ratings, but no text has been rated by a certified process and the library’s ACTFL bands are approximate.
- Mapped skills
- No skills mapped yet
- Remaining gaps
- Any rating of a learner requires a separate, certified assessment.
Textbook companion pathways
The most widely used university series in North America. A companion pathway would pair each chapter’s vocabulary and grammar with Nusoos texts at the matching level.
- Mapped skills
- No skills mapped yet
- Remaining gaps
- Chapter-by-chapter vocabulary comparison not started.
A self-study beginner course. Nusoos A0–A1 texts and the Learn path are natural extra reading for its early units.
- Mapped skills
- No skills mapped yet
- Remaining gaps
- Unit mapping not started.
A widely used Arabic-medium series. Its early levels overlap with Nusoos A1–A2 topics.
- Mapped skills
- No skills mapped yet
- Remaining gaps
- Unit mapping not started.
A grammar-led course popular with self-learners. Nusoos texts could supply the connected reading its lessons lack.
- Mapped skills
- No skills mapped yet
- Remaining gaps
- Grammar-point mapping not started.
What the statuses mean
- Reading & listening mapped
- Lessons name a selected target of this framework for reading and for listening.
- Partial coverage
- Some lessons or some strands are mapped; the rest is not.
- Mapping in progress
- An editor is placing lessons on this pathway now.
- Planned
- Agreed and scheduled, with nothing mapped yet.
- Research target
- Being researched. No lesson is mapped and no coverage is claimed.
- Legacy reference
- Kept for reference only; not used to grade current content.
The full research register is still being imported. Editions marked “to confirm” will be checked against the live syllabus before any mapping starts.
