الْيَوْمُ يَوْمُ الْجُمُعَةِ، وَالْوَقْتُ بَعْدَ الظُّهْرِ. سُوقُ «الرِّيف» فِي دُبَيّ فَارِغٌ تَقْرِيبًا. لَكِنْ تَحْتَ السُّوقِ، قُرْبَ مَوْقِفِ السَّيَّارَاتِ، تَسْمَعُ ضَحِكًا كَثِيرًا. هُنَاكَ مَجْمُوعَةٌ مِنَ النَّاسِ حَوْلَ طَاوِلَاتٍ طَوِيلَةٍ. هُمْ يَلْعَبُونَ الشِّطْرَنْجَ، وَيَضْغَطُونَ عَلَى سَاعَاتٍ صَغِيرَةٍ. هَذِهِ بُطُولَةٌ لِنَادٍ فِلِبِّينِيٍّ لِلشِّطْرَنْجِ. يَلْتَقُونَ هُنَا فِي آخِرِ جُمُعَةٍ مِنْ كُلِّ شَهْرٍ. لَارِي دُولُور مِنَ النَّادِي. يَقُولُ: الشِّطْرَنْجُ لَيْسَ لُعْبَةً فَقَطْ، هُوَ رِيَاضَةٌ. وَيَقُولُ: الْآنَ نَتَدَرَّبُ، وَالْبُطُولَةُ تَبْدَأُ بَعْدَ قَلِيلٍ. يُمْكِنُكَ أَنْ تَأْتِيَ فِي أَيِّ وَقْتٍ، فَالطَّاوِلَاتُ هُنَا دَائِمًا. وَالسُّوقُ يُعْطِي النَّادِيَ هَذَا الْمَكَانَ مَجَّانًا. جِيرِي لَابَابُو يَعْمَلُ فِي الْقُنْصُلِيَّةِ الْفِلِبِّينِيَّةِ. يَقُولُ: آتِي إِلَى هُنَا مَرَّتَيْنِ فِي الْأُسْبُوعِ. نَاسٌ كَثِيرُونَ يَأْتُونَ بَعْدَ الْعَمَلِ لِيَلْعَبُوا. لَيْسُوا فِلِبِّينِيِّينَ فَقَطْ، فَهُنَا هُنُودٌ وَبَاكِسْتَانِيُّونَ وَإِمَارَاتِيُّونَ أَيْضًا. وَصَارَ عِنْدِي أَصْدِقَاءُ كَثِيرُونَ. وَيَقُولُ رَئِيسُ النَّادِي: الْفِلِبِّينِيُّونَ يُحِبُّونَ الْمَجْمُوعَاتِ. عِنْدَهُمْ فِي الْإِمَارَاتِ نَوَادٍ لِلشِّطْرَنْجِ وَالرَّقْصِ وَكُرَةِ السَّلَّةِ. وَدُولُور يُعَلِّمُ ابْنَهُ الشِّطْرَنْجَ، وَعُمْرُ ابْنِهِ اثْنَتَا عَشْرَةَ سَنَةً. وَالشِّطْرَنْجُ مَشْهُورٌ فِي الْإِمَارَاتِ، وَلَهُ نَوَادٍ فِي دُبَيّ وَالشَّارِقَةِ وَالْعَيْنِ وَأَبُوظَبِي. وَهُوَ لُعْبَةٌ قَدِيمَةٌ فِي هَذِهِ الْمِنْطَقَةِ. يَلْعَبُهُ النَّاسُ هُنَا مُنْذُ أَكْثَرَ مِنْ أَلْفِ سَنَةٍ.
Today is Friday, and the time is the afternoon. Al Reef mall in Dubai is almost empty. But under the mall, near the car park, you hear a lot of laughter. There is a group of people around long tables. They are playing chess, and they press small clocks. This is a tournament of a Filipino chess club. They meet here on the last Friday of every month. Larry Dolor is from the club. He says: chess is not just a game; it is a sport. And he says: now we are practising, and the tournament starts in a little while. You can come at any time, because the tables are always here. And the mall gives the club this place for free. Jerry Lababo works at the Philippine consulate. He says: I come here twice a week. Many people come after work to play. They are not only Filipinos: there are Indians, Pakistanis and Emiratis here too. And now I have many friends. And the club’s president says: Filipinos love groups. In the Emirates they have clubs for chess, dance and basketball. And Dolor is teaching h
