فُطْرٌ يَنْمُو دَاخِلَ غُرَفٍ بَارِدَةٍ

فِي إِمَارَةِ الشَّارِقَةِ، فِي الْإِمَارَاتِ الْعَرَبِيَّةِ الْمُتَّحِدَةِ، مَزْرَعَةٌ كَبِيرَةٌ لِلْفُطْرِ. تُوجَدُ الْمَزْرَعَةُ فِي الصَّحْرَاءِ، وَالْجَوُّ هُنَاكَ حَارٌّ جِدًّا فِي الصَّيْفِ. لَكِنَّ الْفُطْرَ يَحْتَاجُ إِلَى جَوٍّ بَارِدٍ وَرَطْبٍ. لِذَلِكَ يَنْمُو الْفُطْرُ هُنَا دَاخِلَ غُرَفٍ مُغْلَقَةٍ. فِي الْمَزْرَعَةِ اثْنَتَا عَشْرَةَ غُرْفَةً لِلزِّرَاعَةِ، فِي مَبْنَيَيْنِ. خَارِجَ الْغُرَفِ حَرٌّ شَدِيدٌ، لَكِنْ دَاخِلَهَا جَوٌّ مُنَاسِبٌ لِلْفُطْرِ طُولَ السَّنَةِ. وَالْفُطْرُ لَيْسَ مِثْلَ النَّبَاتَاتِ، فَهُوَ لَا يَحْتَاجُ إِلَى ضَوْءِ الشَّمْسِ. وَفِي كُلِّ غُرْفَةٍ أَجْهِزَةٌ حَدِيثَةٌ تَسْقِي الْفُطْرَ، وَتَتَحَكَّمُ فِي الْهَوَاءِ، وَتُرَاقِبُ الْغُرْفَةَ. وَقَدْ صَمَّمَتْ هَذِهِ الْغُرَفَ شَرِكَةٌ هُولَنْدِيَّةٌ. وَالْفُطْرُ يَنْمُو هُنَا جَيِّدًا حَتَّى فِي الصَّيْفِ الْحَارِّ، لِأَنَّ جُدْرَانَ الْغُرَفِ تَمْنَعُ الْحَرَّ. وَالْأَجْهِزَةُ تَحْفَظُ الْجَوَّ بَارِدًا وَرَطْبًا دَاخِلَهَا. وَأَكْثَرُ مَا تَزْرَعُهُ الْمَزْرَعَةُ هُوَ الْفُطْرُ الْأَبْيَضُ الصَّغِيرُ. وَالْعَمَلُ لَا يَتَوَقَّفُ: الْعُمَّالُ يَقْطِفُونَ الْفُطْرَ كُلَّ يَوْمٍ. وَهُمْ يَقْطِفُونَ أَكْثَرَ مِنْ سَبْعَةِ أَطْنَانٍ فِي الْيَوْمِ. ثُمَّ يَذْهَبُ الْفُطْرُ إِلَى الْأَسْوَاقِ الْكَبِيرَةِ وَالْمَطَاعِمِ فِي كُلِّ الْإِمَارَاتِ. وَبَعْدَ الْقِطَافِ، تَسْتَعْمِلُ الْمَزْرَعَةُ التُّرْبَةَ الْقَدِيمَةَ مَرَّةً أُخْرَى فِي الْحَدَائِقِ. وَتَبْرِيدُ الْغُرَفِ يَحْتَاجُ إِلَى كَهْرَبَاءَ كَثِيرَةٍ. وَالْمَزْرَعَةُ لَا تَأْخُذُ الْكَهْرَبَاءَ مِنَ الشَّبَكَةِ. فَهِيَ تَصْنَعُ كَهْرَبَاءَهَا مِنَ الشَّمْسِ، وَمِنْ مُوَلِّدَاتٍ تَعْمَلُ بِالدِّيزِلِ. وَهَكَذَا يَنْمُو فِي الصَّحْرَاءِ الْحَارَّةِ فُطْرٌ يُحِبُّ الْبَرْدَ.

In the emirate of Sharjah, in the United Arab Emirates, there is a big mushroom farm. The farm is in the desert, and it is very hot there in summer. But mushrooms need cool, damp air. So here the mushrooms grow inside closed rooms. The farm has twelve growing rooms, in two buildings. Outside the rooms it is very hot, but inside them the air is right for mushrooms all year. And mushrooms are not like plants: they do not need sunlight. And in every room there are modern machines that water the mushrooms, control the air and watch over the room. And a Dutch company designed these rooms. The mushrooms grow well here even in the hot summer, because the room walls keep the heat out. And the machines keep the air cool and damp inside them. And most of what the farm grows is small white mushrooms. And the work never stops: the workers pick mushrooms every day. They pick more than seven tonnes a day.
