فِي قَرْيَةِ السَّقَّايِ فِي السُّودَانِ، النِّسَاءُ يَنْسِجْنَ سَعَفَ النَّخِيلِ بِأَيْدِيهِنَّ. وَالْقَرْيَةُ عَلَى بُعْدِ سَبْعَةٍ وَخَمْسِينَ كِيلُومِتْرًا شَمَالَ الْخُرْطُومِ، عَاصِمَةِ السُّودَانِ. وَيُسَمِّي النَّاسُ هُنَاكَ هَذَا السَّعَفَ «الزَّعَفَ»، وَهُوَ أَوْرَاقٌ قَوِيَّةٌ. وَهَذِهِ مَهَارَةٌ تَقْلِيدِيَّةٌ فِي السُّودَانِ، تُمَارِسُهَا النِّسَاءُ الصَّغِيرَاتُ وَالْكَبِيرَاتُ مُنْذُ زَمَنٍ طَوِيلٍ. قَبْلَ النَّسْجِ، تَضَعُ الْمَرْأَةُ السَّعَفَ فِي الْمَاءِ حَتَّى يَصِيرَ طَرِيًّا. ثُمَّ تَقْطَعُهُ شَرَائِطَ طَوِيلَةً، وَأَحْيَانًا تَصْبُغُهَا بِأَلْوَانٍ. بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ تَضْفِرُ شَرِيطَيْنِ أَوْ ثَلَاثَةً مَعًا. وَفِي النِّهَايَةِ تَخِيطُ الضَّفَائِرَ مَعًا بِالسَّعَفِ نَفْسِهِ. وَمِنَ الزَّعَفِ تَصْنَعُ النِّسَاءُ سِلَالًا بِأَحْجَامٍ مُخْتَلِفَةٍ، وَأَطْبَاقًا لِلطَّعَامِ، وَأَشْيَاءَ أُخْرَى لِلْبَيْتِ. وَيَصْنَعْنَ مِنْهُ أَيْضًا حُصُرًا لِلْجُلُوسِ وَلِلصَّلَاةِ، وَمَرَاوِحَ، وَأَغْطِيَةً لِلْأَطْبَاقِ. السَّلَّةُ تَحْمِلُ الْأَشْيَاءَ، وَالْحَصِيرُ لِلْجُلُوسِ عَلَى الْأَرْضِ. وَالْمِرْوَحَةُ تُعْطِي هَوَاءً فِي الْحَرِّ، وَالْغِطَاءُ يَحْمِي الطَّعَامَ. وَكُلُّ هَذِهِ الْأَشْيَاءِ تُصْنَعُ بِالْيَدِ، وَهِيَ مُفِيدَةٌ فِي الْبَيْتِ. وَفِي السُّودَانِ نَخِيلٌ كَثِيرٌ، قُرْبَ النِّيلِ وَفِي الصَّحْرَاءِ. وَالسَّعَفُ يَخْتَلِفُ مِنْ مَكَانٍ إِلَى مَكَانٍ. فِي الصَّحْرَاءِ تَسْتَعْمِلُ النِّسَاءُ سَعَفَ نَخْلَةِ الدَّوْمِ، وَقُرْبَ النَّهْرِ يَسْتَعْمِلْنَ سَعَفَ نَخْلَةِ التَّمْرِ. وَفِي السَّقَّايِ، مَا زَالَتِ النِّسَاءُ يَنْسِجْنَ السَّعَفَ بِأَيْدِيهِنَّ.
In the village of Al-Saqqai in Sudan, women weave palm leaves by hand. The village is fifty-seven kilometres north of Khartoum, the capital of Sudan. And people there call these palm leaves “zaaf”, and they are tough leaves. And this is a traditional skill in Sudan, which young and old women have practised for a long time. Before weaving, a woman puts the palm leaves in water until they become soft. Then she cuts them into long strips, and sometimes she dyes them in colours. After that she braids two or three strips together. And in the end she sews the braids together with the same palm leaves. From the palm leaves women make baskets of different sizes, food trays and other things for the home. They also make mats from it for sitting and for prayer, fans, and covers for dishes. A basket carries things, and a mat is for sitting on the floor. And a fan gives air in the heat, and a cover protects the food. And all these things are made by hand, and they are useful at home. And Sudan
