The designer Lameice Abu Aker makes colourful glass pieces that may remind many of us of a glass cabinet in a grandmother’s or an aunt’s house. That cabinet holds the finest things, and no one touches them. Lameice says she felt a strong wish to make these pieces. She adds that the shapes came by themselves after that. Glassblowing is said to have started in Palestine and the region around it, and its people have blown glass for thousands of years. Beads, glasses and jugs are still sold in its local markets. So Lameice wanted to use these old methods in a modern way, to make pieces that children will inherit. She says she wants pieces that are a little odd and playful, that people talk about.
