فِي الْبَحْرِ الْأَحْمَرِ، قُرْبَ مَدِينَةِ الْغَرْدَقَةِ فِي مِصْرَ، شِعَابٌ مَرْجَانِيَّةٌ جَمِيلَةٌ. وَالْمَرْجَانُ حَيَوَانَاتٌ صَغِيرَةٌ تَعِيشُ مَعًا، وَهُوَ يَنْمُو بِبُطْءٍ شَدِيدٍ. وَتَأْتِي إِلَى هَذِهِ الشِّعَابِ قَوَارِبُ كَثِيرَةٌ، فِيهَا غَوَّاصُونَ وَسُيَّاحٌ. فِي الْمَاضِي، كَانَ الْقَارِبُ يَقِفُ بِمِرْسَاةٍ. وَالْمِرْسَاةُ قِطْعَةٌ ثَقِيلَةٌ مِنَ الْحَدِيدِ، يَرْمِيهَا الْبَحَّارَةُ فِي الْمَاءِ، لِكَيْ لَا يَتَحَرَّكَ الْقَارِبُ. لَكِنَّ الْمِرْسَاةَ كَانَتْ تَسْقُطُ عَلَى الْمَرْجَانِ، فَتَكْسِرُهُ. وَالْمِرْسَاةُ الْوَاحِدَةُ تُخَرِّبُ مِتْرًا مُرَبَّعًا تَقْرِيبًا مِنَ الْمَرْجَانِ. وَهَذَا الْمَرْجَانُ يَحْتَاجُ إِلَى مِئَةِ سَنَةٍ، لِكَيْ يَنْمُوَ مِنْ جَدِيدٍ. قَالَ صَاحِبُ قَارِبٍ: «كُنَّا نَقْتُلُ رِزْقَنَا، كُلَّمَا رَمَيْنَا الْمِرْسَاةَ فِي الْبَحْرِ». فَالسُّيَّاحُ يَأْتُونَ لِكَيْ يَرَوُا الْمَرْجَانَ، وَبِدُونِ الْمَرْجَانِ لَا عَمَلَ لِلْقَوَارِبِ. لِذَلِكَ وَضَعَتْ جَمْعِيَّةٌ لِحِمَايَةِ الْبِيئَةِ عَوَّامَاتٍ فِي الْبَحْرِ. وَالْعَوَّامَةُ كُرَةٌ كَبِيرَةٌ تَطْفُو فَوْقَ الْمَاءِ. وَتَحْتَهَا حَبْلٌ طَوِيلٌ، مَرْبُوطٌ بِثِقْلٍ ثَابِتٍ فِي قَاعِ الْبَحْرِ. فَيَأْتِي الْقَارِبُ، وَيَرْبِطُهُ الْبَحَّارَةُ بِالْعَوَّامَةِ، وَلَا يَرْمُونَ الْمِرْسَاةَ. وَهَكَذَا يَبْقَى الْمَرْجَانُ سَالِمًا. وَاسْمُ الْجَمْعِيَّةِ «هِبْكَا»، وَهِيَ مِنَ الْغَرْدَقَةِ. بَدَأَتِ الْجَمْعِيَّةُ هَذَا الْعَمَلَ سَنَةَ ١٩٩٥. وَالْيَوْمَ فِي الْبَحْرِ أَكْثَرُ مِنْ أَلْفٍ وَأَرْبَعِمِئَةِ عَوَّامَةٍ. أَكْثَرُهَا لِكُلِّ النَّاسِ، وَبَعْضُهَا عِنْدَ شَوَاطِئَ خَاصَّةٍ. وَأَكْثَرُ أَصْحَابِ الْقَوَارِبِ يَسْتَعْمِلُونَهَا الْيَوْمَ.
In the Red Sea, near the city of Hurghada in Egypt, there are beautiful coral reefs. Coral is made of small animals that live together, and it grows very slowly.
