بَيْنَ أَشْجَارِ الْأَرْزِ فِي الشُّوفِ

فِي جِبَالِ لُبْنَانَ مَحْمِيَّةٌ كَبِيرَةٌ، اسْمُهَا مَحْمِيَّةُ الشُّوفِ. وَهِيَ عَالِيَةٌ: بَيْنَ أَلْفِ مِتْرٍ وَأَلْفَيْ مِتْرٍ فَوْقَ سَطْحِ الْبَحْرِ. وَحَوْلَهَا قُرًى كَثِيرَةٌ. وَفِي الْمَحْمِيَّةِ غَابَاتٌ مِنْ شَجَرِ الْأَرْزِ. وَالْأَرْزُ شَجَرٌ أَخْضَرُ كَبِيرٌ، وَهُوَ رَمْزُ لُبْنَانَ. وَبَعْضُ هَذِهِ الْأَشْجَارِ عُمُرُهُ أَلْفَا سَنَةٍ تَقْرِيبًا. وَهُنَا تَنْبُتُ أَشْجَارُ الْأَرْزِ الْجَدِيدَةُ وَحْدَهَا، بِسُهُولَةٍ أَكْبَرَ مِمَّا تَنْبُتُ فِي أَيِّ غَابَةٍ أُخْرَى فِي لُبْنَانَ. وَتَعِيشُ فِي الْمَحْمِيَّةِ طُيُورٌ كَثِيرَةٌ، مِنْ أَنْوَاعٍ مُخْتَلِفَةٍ. وَفِيهَا حَيَوَانَاتٌ بَرِّيَّةٌ، مِثْلُ الذِّئْبِ، وَالْخِنْزِيرِ الْبَرِّيِّ، وَالْقِطِّ الْبَرِّيِّ. وَهَذِهِ الْحَيَوَانَاتُ لَا تَعِيشُ الْيَوْمَ إِلَّا فِي أَمَاكِنَ قَلِيلَةٍ مِنْ لُبْنَانَ. وَمِنْ حَيَوَانَاتِهَا أَيْضًا الْحِرْبَاءُ وَالسُّلَحْفَاةُ. وَتَنْمُو فِيهَا نَبَاتَاتٌ لِلطَّعَامِ وَلِلدَّوَاءِ، وَنَبَاتَاتٌ لَهَا رَائِحَةٌ طَيِّبَةٌ. الشِّتَاءُ فِي الشُّوفِ بَارِدٌ، وَالثَّلْجُ يَنْزِلُ كَثِيرًا. فِي الشِّتَاءِ تَكُونُ أَغْصَانُ الْأَرْزِ بَيْضَاءَ مِنَ الثَّلْجِ. أَمَّا الصَّيْفُ فَجَافٌّ، وَلَا يَنْزِلُ فِيهِ مَطَرٌ لِمُدَّةٍ طَوِيلَةٍ. وَفِي الْقُرَى حَوْلَ الْمَحْمِيَّةِ مُرْشِدُونَ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْمِنْطَقَةِ. وَهُمْ يَعْرِفُونَ كُلَّ مَكَانٍ فِي قُرَاهُمْ وَحَوْلَهَا. يَبْدَأُ الزُّوَّارُ مَعَهُمْ فِي الْقَرْيَةِ، ثُمَّ يَمْشُونَ إِلَى الْغَابَةِ، ثُمَّ يَصْعَدُونَ إِلَى أَشْجَارِ الْأَرْزِ الْقَدِيمَةِ. وَهُنَاكَ يَقِفُونَ تَحْتَ الْأَغْصَانِ الْكَبِيرَةِ، وَيَشُمُّونَ رَائِحَةَ الْأَرْزِ.

In the mountains of Lebanon there is a large nature reserve, called the Shouf Reserve. And it is high: between one thousand and two thousand metres above sea level. And around it there are many villages. And in the reserve there are forests of cedar trees. The cedar is a big green tree, and it is the symbol of Lebanon. And some of these trees are about two thousand years old. And here new cedar trees grow on their own, more easily than they grow in any other forest in Lebanon. And many birds, of different kinds, live in the reserve. And it has wild animals, like the wolf, the wild boar and the wild cat. And today these animals live in only a few places in Lebanon. And among its animals are also the chameleon and the tortoise. And plants for food and for medicine grow there, and plants with a nice smell. Winter in the Shouf is cold, and it snows a lot.
